Lester Brown

As part of GWAC's  lecture series,  Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute and acclaimed environmental author, will be speaking at Cary Memorial Hall on April 6, at 7:30 PM.   Mr. Brown founded the Earth Policy Institute in 2001 to provide a vision and a road map for achieving an environmentally sustainable economy. In November 2001, he published Eco-Economy: Building an Economy for the Earth <http://www.earth-policy.org/Books/Eco/index.htm>, which was hailed by E.O. Wilson as "an instant classic." He followed this in 2003 with another path-breaking book, Plan B: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble <http://www.earth-policy.org/Books/PB/index.htm>. His most recent book is Outgrowing the Earth: The Food Security Challenge in an Age of Falling Water Tables and Rising Temperatures <http://www.earth-policy.org/Books/Out/index.htm>.  In Plan B: 2.0, Mr. Brown calls for a worldwide mobilization to stabilize population and climate before they spiral out of control. It provides a plan for sustaining economic progress worldwide. Here he outlines a plan, a budget, and a timetable for rescuing our twenty-first century civilization. The plan includes eradicating poverty, stabilizing population, protecting and restoring soils, forests, rangelands, and fisheries, and conserving the earth's biological diversity.

He is the recipient of many prizes and awards, including more than 20 honorary degrees, a MacArthur Fellowship, the 1987 United Nations' Environment Prize, the 1989 World Wide Fund for Nature Gold Medal, and the 1994 Blue Planet Prize for his "exceptional contributions to solving global environmental problems." More recently he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Italy, the Borgström Prize by Royal Swedish Academy, and appointed an honorary professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

200 copies of his book, "PLAN B, 2.0 - Rescuing a Planet under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble" will be given to the members of the audience on a first-come basis.

This event is co-sponsored by First Parish Church in Waltham and Sustainable Belmont.
