Learn more about Energy Efficient Home Building on Monday, Oct. 26 at 7PM, with a talk by Carter Scott, President of Transformations, Inc., a residential development and building company located in Townsend, which specializes in sustainable development and green building. Mr. Scott's most notable development, Coppersmith Way in Townsend, is a sub-division of LEED certified, ultra energy efficient homes, all of them with renewable energy systems.
Transformations has built seven Near Zero Energy Homes (with HERS Indices under 40) at Coppersmith Way and Transformations had three of the "Top Ten Scoring Energy Star Homes" in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts' investor-owned electric utility companies recently implemented a unique energy efficiency pilot program called the Zero Energy Challenge. They enrolled five home builders, who constructed single-family residences throughout the Commonwealth that would attempt to use little to no energy. The purpose of the initiative is to promote the use of advanced energy efficiency technologies and engage Massachusetts builders in utilizing advanced building techniques.
The five projects competed for three prizes totaling $50,000.00 and needed to demonstrate best practice HVAC installations, demonstrate the use of advanced and replicable building techniques, as well as integrating the use of renewable energy technologies. The winners were selected based on their projects score on the nationally recognized ENERGY STAR/HERS rating scale.
Mr. Scott won second place, building a 1,121 sq. ft, 3 bedroom affordable home in Townsend that includes a well-insulated shell - R42 walls, R64 ceilings, and triple-pane windows - and a 5.7 kW PV system. The house earned a HERS verification rating of -2.30. [more on the Townsend house]
